Topic: Assumption

Make no assumptions about what that word means. Like so many common words, there are layers and layers of meaning there. Here are some possibilities of what is packed into “assumption”:

The act of assuming or taking to or upon oneself. His assumption of secretarial duties was timely.

The act of taking for granted or supposing a thing without proof. Their assumption of his guilt disqualified them from jury duty.

From Medieval Lation assumptio: A taking up (into heaven).

And Latin assumptio: A taking up, adoption, the minor proposition of a syllogism.

And, the taking of a person up into heaven. A festival in honor of the ascent of the Virgin Mary. (The festival of the Assumption is celebrated on August 15.)

Click HERE for a photo of Titian’s famous painting titled “Assumption”. What’s the story in that picture?

And what’s your story, assumed or otherwise?
